Home Security

If you are a parent, then you can understand how parents of any kind make extra efforts to keep their family’s protection and safety of topmost priority. It is the parent’s natural instincts to provide protection for their kids and their loved ones. For this reason, many parents keep guns at home. Aside from the safety of family members, parents and homeowners also have the natural instinct to provide protection for their properties. Whether we talk of home and land property or smaller valuables like furniture, jewelry or money, people make sure that these hard earned properties are well protected.

To protect smaller property, we usually have the concept of safe and secure storage places. Having safety vaults at home constitutes this need to keep our valuables safe. One great storage and safety place for our valuables is a gun safe.

Gun safes are primarily developed to be storage places for guns and ammunition. Gun safes are specifically engineered to store different kinds of guns. These gun safes are secure storage places for guns and their bullets to protect them from any illegal access as well as from fire and water. Gun safes are necessary to keep your guns safe and protected from any illegal access. They protect your guns from burglary as well from the illegal use of it. Aside from protecting guns from illegal or unwanted access by strangers and intruders, gun safes also serve as protection from illegal access by family members of gun owners. Children, for example, are protected from guns by keeping the guns and bullets in gun safes.

Not only guns can be kept in gun safes. Most gun safes are engineered with special safety lock or lock combinations. These safety features ensure that only its legal owners can open them, thus, protecting the guns from any other use. Gun safes are also great storage places for other important properties. Valuable properties like important documents and jewelry can also be stored in them. Gun safes have features like fire and water proof features to keep the valuables inside away from any possible damage.

Having gun safes at home have long ceased to be simply for gun storage and protection. Different kinds of valuables can be kept in them. There are different gun safe types and models that can fit your preference. Some gun safes can be used for the wall, the floor, or as is. Choose the right gun safe model that would best fit your security preferences.

For most people, gun ownership is primarily to provide protection. Whether it is protection for yourself, your family, your loved ones, or for property, guns are considered to be weapons that can secure and save. For this reason, many of us choose to have guns in our homes and offices. We feel more secure if we have guns handy and easily accessible in times of great need.
Gun ownership, of course, entails big responsibility for gun owners. There have been many cases of deaths and injuries caused by the improper use of guns. Every responsible gun owner must make sure that gun safety tips and measures are followed strictly to prevent any shooting accidents or any dangerous situations caused by guns and its ownership. Here are a few tips and safety measures that can be useful for every gun owner:

Have a safe storage place for your guns. Keeping your guns in a gun safe is the best option for gun storage. Gun safes provide protection for the guns themselves against illegal access, water damage and fire. The time when people keep guns by the dresser, in the closet or under the bed has long passed. Keeping your guns in secure gun safes provides you the necessary protection against gun stealing and also gun shooting accidents.

Unload your gun in storage. When your guns are kept in gun safes or in any other storage, make sure that they are unloaded. This ensures maximum security for any kind of illegal access. Kids are known to be curious when it comes to guns. Keeping your gun unloaded protects your children from any shooting accidents.

Keep your guns away from children. We have heard of many cases where kids accidentally shoot other family members because they play with guns. Even if you do not allow your kids to play or even hold your guns, there are still great chances that they can take hold of it. Erase this possibility by having gun safes at home and with only you knowing the lock combination.

Hide your gun safe keys. Some gun safes use keys to open them. Make sure that your gun safe keys are away from other family members to avoid any access to them. Keep the keys away from regular home keys like car keys or house keys. Keep your gun safe keys secure but have yourself easy access to them in times of need and emergencies.

The American economic crisis and personal security fears appear to be the driving force behind a recent surge in the sale of a number of consumer items, one of the most surprising of which is household safes.

Safe retailers and manufacturers had been reporting a dramatic increase in sales beginning with the start of the economic crisis, then elevating sales again as the market continued to dive.

Some manufacturers have reported up to a 50% increase in sales over this time last year. Despite the state of the economy and the negative effect on spending in general, there are a few markets that have seen an increase in sales.

Increases in demand for products like household safes, home electronics and firearms appear to be directly linked to the economic crisis. The Consumer Electronic Association has predicted that sales of certain electronics will increase despite the drop in allover consumer spending.

The CEA believes that people will spend a little money on home entertainment such as video games and televisions instead of a lot of money on outside dining and entertainment. Guns are another product that analysts are watching. Historically, the sale of guns rises during economic hardships. This is usually attributed to people’s fears of civil unrest and higher crime rates.

However, the surge in household safes may be unique to this particular economic crisis. The government seizure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as the sale of financial heavyweights such as Merrill Lynch, Wachovia and Washington Mutual appear to have consumers fearing for their personal savings and investments more so than in previous economic downturns.

Authority Safes Sales Manager Janel Crisp has spoken with several customers expressing their concern for the economy and personal security. “We’ve had a lot of new customers saying they just want something where they can store their important papers, cash and jewelry, sometimes even gold in. They just want that sense of security that their vital possessions are nearby and safe,” she said.

This appears to be the trend throughout the market as more consumers are feeling the blow to their sense of financial security stemming from the collapse of financial institutions.

According to Crisp, since the start of the economic downturn began, sales have risen in specific areas, such as larger and stronger safes. “There has definitely been an increase in people asking for larger safes, over 500 pounds, and safes with burglary and fire protection ratings,”she said.

Without knowing when and how the economy will turn, there’s no way to know what kind of other economy-based consumer trends will be appearing. Until then, it seems consumers will continue to purchase the items that increase their sense of security and help them ride out the crisis.

Fire is a deadly threat to every household. It can strike without warning. The fact is that in 2005, there were nearly 381,000 home fires in the U.S. resulting in over 16,000 injuries and deaths combined according to the National Fire Protection Association. We must all be prepared by using fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and escape ladders for fire protection.

Smoke alarms provide early warning when fire happens. Smoke alarms are best, most efficient way to alert your family of a fire in its beginning stages. The more smoke alarms you have installed in your home, the better your chances are that you will be alerted to a fire in progress.

Fire extinguishers provide a tool to fight small, contained fires. Having fire extinguishers strategically distributed in all areas of your home can increase your chances of keeping a small fire from getting out of control and becoming deadly.

Fire extinguishers are categorized by Underwriters Laboratories ratings. The ratings determine what size and type of fire that an extinguisher should be used on. Types of fires are divided into three categories: A, B, or C. “A” type fires are primarily wood, paper and fabric fires. “B” type fires are primarily flammable liquids and oil based fires. Finally, “C” type fires are energized electrical fires.

The number preceding the A, B, or C rating determines the size fire the extinguisher has been tested to be effective on. For example, a 10-B:C fire extinguisher theoretically will extinguish a 25 foot square fire of either flammable liquid or energized electrical origin. A 5-B:C extinguisher could handle a 12.5 square foot fire that is flammable liquid or electrical based.

Being ready by using both smoke alarms and fire extinguishers in your home, having a prepared, rehearsed escape plan and knowing what to do in case of fire, can help save your home and your family. Fire tragedies are preventable!

Most guidelines recommend installing at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Also, place an emergency escape ladder in each second or third level bedroom of your home. It is also smart to install a fire extinguisher in a convenient location on each level. If you have a large home, you should consider more than one extinguisher per level

The minimum protection for most homes includes installing one smoke alarm and one fire extinguisher on each level. However, check your local building code for detailed smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm requirements.

Is home safety at the top of your to do list? Smoke alarms are your first line of defense.

While you are likely very excited about your upcoming plans to travel for the holidays, you need to make sure you take the time to prepare your home as well. Criminals are very aware that people travel for the holidays and they look for homes to target during that period of time. There is a much lower risk of getting caught during this time because so many people are paying attention to their own plans.

Make sure you carefully check all the doors and the windows before you leave for the holidays. They should all be securely locked to prevent someone from slipping into them undetected. If you have an alarm system you want to make sure you set it before you head out. Put fresh batteries is motion lights and outdoor video equipment that you may have installed. Don’t leave extra keys under the mat or other common locations where criminals can easily find them and walk right into your home.

You don’t want your home to appear to be empty when you travel for the holidays. If possible have a friend or neighbor stop by daily. Most criminals stake out homes so if they see different lights on or they see fresh footprints in the snow they will be less likely to target your home.

Either have someone collect your mail and newspapers daily or put them on hold until you return from your holiday travel. Not only is this a dead give away that you are out of town, it can also lead to identity theft. All it takes is for a criminal to get their hands on your bank statement or a credit card statement and they could wipe out your account and charge items that you will have against your credit card.

If you are traveling during the colder part of the year for the holidays, have someone shovel your driveway and sidewalks. This definitely gives the impression that you are home or at least that someone is keeping a very close eye on your home. You also want to set your thermostat at a decent temperature while you are way. The added expense of the heating bill will be nothing compared to the damage from broken pipes that may have froze due to the drop in temperatures while you were traveling for the holidays.

Make sure a friend or a neighbor has a way to contact you in the event of an emergency involving your home while you are away for the holidays. Hopefully they won’t need to contact you but having such measures in place can be very beneficial if an issue does arise. They may be able to take care of low priority issues for you such as the sprinkler system not turning off or someone hitting your mailbox with their vehicle due to sliding on icy roads.

It can be very nice to travel for the holidays, but do all you can in order to ensure your home will be protected while you are away. You don’t want to come home and find that your home has been burglarized or later that your personal information has been compromised. Some planning before you travel for the holidays will help to ensure everything is safe and sound when you return.
