In the news today our archaeologists and scientists have been on fire with the findings of so many different kinds of old finds. I am referring to things that had been underground for millions of years. In a Greek dig, they unearthed a very old Neolithic household and some of its gear. In another find, they found a 190 million year old small juvenile dinosaur that was the size of a pigeon, weighing no more than two sticks of butter. Despite its size, this was no little angel. It was called a hodgepodge but had very big teeth that served as fang-like canines for tearing into small mammals, reptiles, and even some insects to shreds. It also had flat molars for eating plants.

In another part of the world, they found a rock formation that they found to have many different footprints of several different dinosaurs, which they are calling a graveyard with some calling it a dance floor. In China, some scientists and hikers found what they believed to be the footprints of the abominable snowman or Yeti, as they call it.

With all of these great finds, our scientists and archaeologists will be keeping busy for many years to come to try to completely uncover these finds intact. Some of these sites may cover a lot of land and take a lot of years to complete. They will have to bring in a lot of people to help with this uncovering and also bring in a lot of very big machinery to help with the removal of the dirt that is pushed aside.

If this isn’t enough, there is always the news on space travel and all the trips and equipment that is being sent into our space to find out if there are places that we could possibly live on in the future. We already have some people living in space on space stations. They will stay up there for some time, are brought back home, and we will send someone to take their place.

When these people are brought home, they are put into air chambers to bring their bodies back to breathing air and getting them used to walking on their muscles, as they haven’t had to use these muscles for some time. They also need to get them accustomed to eating regular food that is not in liquid form. Their stomachs aren’t used to solid food, and this might have some effect on their bodies, which could make their stay in these chambers be a while.

French people like to complain that the French language is under siege by English, the dominant language in the world. They talk about it as if the survival of French was at stake. In reality, the number of French speakers is growing in the world but it is particularly true in places you would not expect.

French is with English the only language that is spoken on all continents. There are about 200 million French speakers in the world. 72 million of them are classified as partial speakers. It ranks 9th in all spoken languages in terms of usage. French is spoken as a first or second language in 51 countries.

The French language is well alive and always evolving. Adoption of new words in the official dictionaries is up to the French Academy (l?Academie Francaise) an independent institution whose role it is to protect and control the evolution of the French language.

Certain new English words that are quickly adopted by the French like e-mail , DVD and CD-ROM are eventually officially replaced by new French words: ecourrier, devede, and logiciel. It is particularly funny to note that these changes are made official by the government.

Leave it to the French to make it mandatory to use French in billing statements and instruction booklets. It is forbidden to use any other language in ads or general broadcasting. Even the constitution of France was amended in the early 90’s to make French the official language.

Did you know that there are more French speakers in Africa than in Europe or any other place in the world? Actually 75% of French speakers reside in Africa. Even Canada with its more than 9 million French speakers is far behind and the USA only count 700,000 French speakers. In Europe, German is the most spoken language. French and Italian come in second and English is third.

The French language is well represented on the internet (5%) but still far behind English (45% of web pages) or even German (7%). It?s not so bad if you think that 90% of languages are not represented on the internet. It is also the second most learned foreign language in the world after English.

One reason the French are may be a little paranoid about the place of French in the world is that they have been used to its prominent place. French has always been important in diplomacy. French was the chosen language for most treaties between nations in history. It was the favorite language of the Spanish Kings and Russian Tsars. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations, the Olympics and the African Union.

Most of the actions done in France to preserve the French language are really more about the fear of the dominance of the English world especially, the United States. In reality, French is far from being threatened. More and more people speak French in the world. And because most French speakers actually live in third world countries with very high birth rates, projections show that the French language is only going to keep growing in its usage.
